Did Krishna commit treachery?
by Vinod hariharan
Krishna was a human avatar who was born in Dwapara yuga as the 8th Avatar of Lord Vishnu , a human form which naturally should face Karma for his deeds ,not to mention his deeds were calculated moves which had a specific purpose. But Krishna goes about doing his deeds without expecting results , he had no attachment to the results .Krishna tells Arjuna that when Adharma overpowers Dharma, he shall take birth each time to reestablish Dharma .
During the last phases of war, Arjuna was getting depressed , fighting & killing his own relatives & getting in to a mental crisis.. Eventually krishna shows Arjuna his Vishvarupa where Arjuna sees the whole universe- every creation, every living being . Krishna was the infinite universe with no beginning , no end, the supreme being. Arjuna then had to beg Krishna to come back to his human form and after Gita discourse by krishna, Arjuna gains wisdom and continues fight.
Did Sri krishna commit misdeeds as some misrepresent?
1) In the War, there used to be many warrior formations, the most complicated one to break was chakravyuh. Arjuna was the only Pandava who knew how to break it and once he explained it to Shubadra while she was pregnant (with Abhimanyu in the womb), that is how Abhimanyu learnt of it while he was unborn . But his unborn son did not know how to get out of that formation . During Kurukshetra war, Abhimanyu broke through chakravyuha formation and slaughtered them like a great hero of the yore . Once he got in to the center of Vyuha, he killed a sizeable number of Kauravas. As per the rules of kurukshetra war, one warrior was supposed to fight with only one another, 1:1 always and no one was supposed to attack an unarmed warrior. Abhimanyu, at one stage had his chariot damaged inside this formation and ran out of weapons as well. But the Adharmic mindset of kauravas wanted to end Abhimanyu who was a raging warrior who threatened the existence of Kauravas. Abhimanyu had to then pick up chariot wheel and fight when many Kauravas attacked him and eventually killed him.
On hearing of this treachery, Arjuna took a vow that he shall kill Jayadrada who killed his son ,by sunset next day , if not he shall kill himself. Whole Kauravas were overjoyed and Duryodhana said whole Army shall be deployed to protect Jayadrada next day till sunset such that Arjuna shall have to honor his vow and commit suicide.
Next day, 14th day of the war, Arjuna rallied ferociously towards Jayadrada, but as jayadrada was protected by the entire force of Kauravas, it was not possible for Arjuna to reach Jayadrada before Sunset. Sensing this , just little before actual sunset, Krishna used his powers and formed a cloud that hid the sun. This made Kauravas jump in joy thinking that Arjuna lost it ,they were all exalted hoping to see Arjuna commiting suicide. Jayadrada too came out of hiding to watch Arjuna . Suddenly Krishna removed the cloud so that Arjuna could kill Jayadrada just in time.
Was this a treachery by Krishna? If Kauravas could use adharmic ways to kill Abhimanyu by going against the set rules of Kurukshetra war, if they could cheat Pandavas during the game of dice, if they could cheat and try to kill Bheem numerous times, there is nothing wrong in Krishna using Adharmic ways to ensure victory for Dharma . Everything becomes equitable .
2) When Arjuna and Karna were at war, both were equally good warriors, on an even scale . But Karna had a very special weapon- Pashupatastra which can kill anyone that he acquired as a boon through tapas. When Karna unleashed Pashupatastra on Arjuna, Krishna the chariot driver of Arjuna saw it and he sank the chariot wheel by few inches in time so that the weapon aimed at Arjuna's head hit the crown and knocked it off .
3). When game of dice was going on between Pandavas and Kauravas, Krishna could have easily helped Pandavas win the game so they could escape ignominy of defeat . Was this a treachery by Krishna on Pandavas? In Udhav Gita, Krishna explains this to his friend Udhava very elaborately.
-First of all Pandavas did not wish to inform Krishna about this game . And as game was starting, Duryodhana replaced himself with Shakuni to the surprise of everyone. Shakuni was an uncanny dicer whose hobby was playing dice day in day out. Fielding Shakuni was against spirit of the game as it was originally fixed between Yudhishtira and Duryodhana themselves.
As Yudhishtira started losing the game he started praying that krishna should not come to know of this. He lost his kingdom, his people and finally Draupadi . Yet Dharma ( Yudhistira) kept praying that Krishna should not get cognisant of this happening .
Udhav Gita:
Krishna explains to Udhava in Udhav Gita that he was waiting outside the hall when game was being played. But as Pandavas kept praying that Krishna should never come there at that moment, he was bound by their prayers and had to wait outside.
Krishna replies to Udhava that "in life one who is cautious ,wins . "Dharma lost to Kauravas because Dharma ( Yudhishtira) did not use wisdom he was bestowed with whereas Duryodhana used it well and made Shakuni play the game. What stopped Yudhishtira from saying, Krishna shall play this game on my behalf? Had that been the case do you think Shakuni would have won it against me? Do you think Shakuni could have called the numbers correctly in the game against me? Would Pandavas have lost kingdom, people, Draupadi if i played? On top , Dharma ( Yudhishtira)bound me outside the hall through his prayers. Even when they kept losing Nakula, sahadeva, Arjuna, Bhima... they kept fighting on their strength than calling me in. Just one call and i would have joined them.
To this Udhav asks" Great Krishna, so you shall come and help your people only if you are called , is that the way for you to conduct, watching people suffering ?
And Krishna replies " Every soul takes up a body and goes through their own karmas, i do not conduct life, i am a mere observer. I keep watching life from close quarters . I am not supposed to interfere with Karmas- that is the Dharma of Gods"
Udhava: "Ok Krishna, so you just keep observing our sinful deeds and the amount of karma that we accumulate. You do not act then?" and Krishna replies again : " if you are aware that i am observing you & witnessing your life , if you are cognisant of my presence, why shall you do sinful deeds & accumulate karma ? when you forget that i am witnessing your life and ignore me, shall you start acting on your own and invite sinful deeds. When the game of dice started, had Dharma knew that i am witness to his life, he would not have tied me outside the hall and he believed he could wain the game on his own strength"
So ,is there a justification for Adharma done by Krishna or is his Adharma more saner than that of Kauravas. Answer lies in a series of deception and treachery employed by Kauravas throughout the life to eliminate Pandavas - be it poisoning Bheem, tying Bheem with a rope and pushing him to the river, game of dice which was full of deceit by Kauravas, disrobing of Draupadi in full public view, burning of palace made of lac and sulphur to eliminate Pandavas. Kauravas spoke of Dharma when it suited them and when they were in a position of vantage, they went back to adharmic ways again.
But Krishna, who had a human form in this Avatar and whose very purpose was to get Dharma back on top of Adharma ,had accumulated his Karmas by virtue of him being a human incarnation and finally krishna was shot dead by an arrow while he was resting in a forest. A hunter mistook him to be a deer and shot an arrow and that was a Karmic end to this avatar.
