Difference between Ramayana and Mahabharata is that Ramayana is an epic on principles of Life - an ideal King, Ideal husband, Idea son whereas Mahabharata is one about Dharma versus Adharma . Kauravas chose Adharmic ways to subjugate Pandavas through out
Facts to prove MB was a true incident:
1)River Saraswati is referred to in MB as a mighty river many times and Saraswati started drying around 1900 BCE which means MB happened before that , Saraswati is mentioned in Vedas and in Ramayana as well which shows a continuity of civilisation around the river. River Saraswati was captured by satellite landsat of Nasa in 1920s and later ISRO satellites mapped its full original path . Saraswati itself is a proof that MB happened in real.
2). Many cities mentioned in Mahabharata still exists such as Dwaraka, Mathura , Hasthinapur, Indraprastha and submerged city of Dwaraka was already located under the sea
3). Greek historian Megasthenes has stated that Chandragupta Maurya is 138th King from lineage of Sri Krishna
4). Aryabhatta dated MB war in around 3100 BCE, historian BB Lal dated it around 3400 BCE and Japanese study using skymap software fixes it around 3200 BCE. So there is a near about commonality there
Link between Ramayana & Mahabharata:
Lord Shiva appears in both. Rama and avana were both Shiv Bhakts. In MB there is a mention of a duel between Kirat and Arjuna when they shoot a wild boar and then Kirat ( Shiva) defeats Arjuna in a duel .
Brihadbala, last king of Kosala kingdom, a descendant of Lord Rama fought for kauravas in MB. He was killed by Abhimanyu in Kurukshetra war. During Karna's digvijaya yatra, he conquered Kosala kingdom and hence Brihadbala had to fight for kauravas.
